Holy moly, it’s hot out there! Thank goodness we live in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, where relief is usually just a dock, beach or paddle away. This month, our team is sharing the coolest Minnesota bodies of water tied to some of our favorite memories, traditions and summer escapes. From lakes we grew up visiting to rivers and shorelines we return to whenever we can, these are the places that make summer here feel like home. Dive in and see which spots made our list — and add them to yours!
Jenny Alvermann — Gooseberry Falls
One of my all-time favorite spots in Minnesota, not just for the spectacular view but also the surrounding park, wildlife and great hiking. No trip up to the falls is complete without a fish sandwich from Northern Waters Smokehaus in Duluth on the way up and a slice of pie from Betty’s in Two Harbors on the way down!

Ever since my wife and I first started dating, this has been a backdrop throughout our lives.
Jen Hellman — Balsam Lake
It’s not in Minnesota, but it’s close enough! My happy place is Balsam Lake, in Wisconsin, for spending time with family, friends and so many St. Paul area peeps!
Kamilah Jester — Mille Lacs Lake
Over the past few years, this lake has become a special place for me and my friends. No matter the season, we make an effort to get together for a weekend to swim, play games and relax.
Heidi Larson — Lake Superior
Lake Superior in the summer is always spectacular. Especially on the 4th of July with fireworks!
Katie Lauer — Lake of the Isles
The Minneapolis Chain of Lakes is its own wonder, but the unique shape and 2.63-mile walking path around Lake of the Isles raises it to the top. You get to see cool houses, ducks and a pencil statue. The first time I walked around it was with my now spouse, so I have a sentimental attachment to it, too!
Jake Ricker — Shady Oak Lake
One of thousands of small lakes dotting Minnesota, this one near our house has become our family’s favorite beach for a few hours of fun in the water on a hot summer day. It’s perfect for kids: a nicely maintained beach, clear water, diving platforms, a floating obstacle course, a playground and an active concession stand.
Grace Rose — Lake Nokomis
I love the Nokomis main beach, and the Chicago-style hot dog at the lakeside restaurant is tough to beat!
Sara Swenson — Lake Superior
From hiking in the many beautiful state parks to skipping rocks on a beach to running along its shores, Lake Superior is the one place in Minnesota I like to go to every year and in every season. This lake really is superior!
Janet Vue – Lake Superior
A recent trip up to Duluth this past winter proved to me that our great lakes, especially Lake Superior, can — and should be — visited and enjoyed all year round!
John-Paul Yates — Boundary Waters
There are too many beautiful lakes and rivers in the Boundary Waters to choose just one, but if I had to choose a few, my list would include Tuscarora, Knife, Winchell and Cherokee.
