Legislators – and our own government relations team – virtually returned to the Capitol earlier this month for the start of the 2021-2022 legislative session. A new crop of legislators and staff have settled in and committee work is underway. The virtual working environment has presented its fair share of challenges already, with delays in bill drafting and sometimes confusing committee processes.
While legislators have focused on hearing from state agencies and stakeholders presenting issue overviews to start the session, the presentation of the administration’s budget this week will kick up activity for the next few weeks.
Governor Tim Walz released his administration’s budget proposal for the FY22-23 biennium. Calling it “Minnesota’s COVID-19 Recovery Budget,” the plan focuses on providing relief to small businesses and working families while supporting additional assistance to schools. The proposal, with more than $52 billion slotted for spending, raises revenue from the creation of a fifth-tier income tax and relies on significant federal funds to carry forward programs.
Our team will be working around the clock this session to bring our clients the highest quality political intelligence to inform successful legislative strategies. We stand ready if your organization needs assistance during these challenging times.
