What was the first job you ever had?
The first job I ever had was a summer internship taking photos and videos for Scrubs Camp — a camp to promote careers in the health sciences to middle and high school students.
What’s a project you’ve worked on that you’re particularly proud of and why?
While it’s a pleasure working with new clients, I find it very fulfilling working with recurring clients. Not only have our relationships and my skills grown, but it’s fun collaborating to find new ways to accomplish the client’s creative goals with a fresh perspective.
What tips do you have for clients preparing for a photo shoot?
I believe confidence is key to capturing someone’s essence, but it’s also about comfort. Try on the clothes you’re wearing before the shoot and get comfortable with how you move and appear in them.
What’s the most interesting skill-building course you’ve taken recently?
I’d recommend School of Motion to any creative professional who is committed to strengthening graphic design, motion design and/or 3D skills. They’re approximately three-monthlong courses with an online cohort and a TA who provides feedback. I’ve completed two courses in 2D motion design and am currently taking a 3D course.
Which current trends in multimedia excite you most?
From compositing 3D assets into live-action footage to designing computer assets to appear more lifelike, blurring the boundaries between mediums is exciting and always grabs my attention. A recent example that has inspired me is this piece by Geometrip, which uses both analog and digital design to dramatic effect. Initially designed in 3D, physical media is cut out and photographed to accomplish this eye-catching video.
Which spot do you recommend out-of-towners visit when they come to Minnesota?
Bike our nation-leading trails around the Twin Cities, possibly to Minnehaha Falls with lunch at Isle Bun and Coffee or Walker Art Center with lunch at Cardamom. In the evening, I’d recommend attending a show at the longest-running comedy club in America, Brave New Workshop, and grabbing a late bite and drinks at Little Tijuana.
What’s a recent movie you’ve watched that blew you away?
“Worst Person in the World” by Joachim Trier is a delightful rom-com about the power and responsibility of taking agency in your life.
What was the highlight of your summer?
I travelled to Austria, Germany and Switzerland with my wife and mom! I’m still a little full from all the delightful food and beer and cash strapped from buying our new cuckoo clock.
If you could instantly learn any skill, what would it be?
I used to play alto saxophone and was pretty dang good at it! Considering my shot for a career in the NFL is waning thin, I’ll defer to my other high school pastime.
What trivia category do you dominate in?
Cinema, baby, cinema!
