What you can do this summer to prepare for the 2020 legislative session

Goff Public’s government relations team.

The end of Minnesota’s 2019 legislative session culminated in late-night meetings, last-minute deals and closed-door meetings. While Goff Public’s government relations team was on the ground for every moment of it, our client success stories start to build well before the legislative session begins.

Effective legislative campaigns rely on established, quality relationships with legislators and affected stakeholders. Here are a few tips to make sure your organization is prepared for whatever 2020 holds.

1) Tell your story and listen to theirs. Solid legislative relationships are built upon a common understanding of what motivates all sides. Meeting a legislator for coffee in his/her district without a specific agenda is a powerful tool.

2) Ask questions. Without the hustle and bustle of the legislative session, now is a good time to evaluate your legislative presence, ask stakeholders for input and ask your legislators for their support of your agenda.

3) Show up. As the saying goes, you can’t win the game if you don’t play. Attending fundraisers, volunteering for your allies and being present during the interim goes a long way to demonstrate to legislators and stakeholders that your organization intends to build long-term relationships.

The 2019 legislative session may be over, but our government relations team will be hard at work all summer and fall building success for our clients. Contact our Vice President of Government Relations Elizabeth Emerson to find out how our team can assist your organization in achieving its legislative goals.
