The end of Minnesota’s 2019 legislative session culminated in late-night meetings, last-minute deals and closed-door meetings. Effective legislative campaigns rely on established, quality relationships with legislators and affected stakeholders. Here are a few tips to make sure your organization is prepared for whatever 2020 holds.
1) Tell your story and listen to theirs. Solid legislative relationships are built upon a common understanding of what motivates all sides. Meeting a legislator for coffee in his/her district without a specific agenda is a powerful tool.
2) Ask questions. Without the hustle and bustle of the legislative session, now is a good time to evaluate your legislative presence, ask stakeholders for input and ask your legislators for their support of your agenda.
3) Show up. As the saying goes, you can’t win the game if you don’t play. Attending fundraisers, volunteering for your allies and being present during the interim goes a long way to demonstrate to legislators and stakeholders that your organization intends to build long-term relationships.
