What’s the lesson here?

A story in the news today has deeply troubled me, so I thought it would be therapeutic to share my thoughts in writing.

My heart is breaking today for Alison Parker; Adam Ward; and their friends, families and colleagues at WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, Virginia. They were murdered on live television this morning by a coworker with a grudge. The cowardly gunman filmed the entire incident, and the images are horrifying.

Who you calling ugly? Minnesotans rally around social media to change the narrative

The Washington Post might think twice next time they consider publishing something that challenges Minnesota’s splendor.

On August 17, the national news outlet published “Every county in America, ranked by scenery and climate” – a seemingly non-controversial report on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “natural amenities index.” To nearly everyone in Minnesota, though, this map was shocking – not only did Minnesota fare particularly poorly on these “natural aspects of attractiveness,” but our own Red Lake County was deemed “the absolute worst place to live in America.”

SMSC teams up with the American Heart Association to improve Native nutrition nationally

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) recently joined forces with the American Heart Association to help address issues of poor nutrition and health of Native Americans on a national level. This announcement follows the launch in March of Seeds of Native Health, the SMSC’s campaign to help improve Native nutrition, and the recent release of Feeding Ourselves, a new report detailing the grave dietary crisis facing many Native American communities.

Shakeups in the local media

One of the only constants in the news media is change. This summer the Star Tribune purchased CityPages and discontinued Vita.mn; the Pioneer Press moved from its longstanding building in the heart of downtown Saint Paul to West Saint Paul; MPR laid off nine newsroom staff members; and the Pohlad Companies’ Go Media purchased BringMeTheNews.

Goff Public closely follows these moves and knows that when sharing news with the media, an accurate, targeted list is as important as a well-written press release.
